Right after I moved to the South Loop I discovered this trendy little Bar right at the corner of Michigan Ave and 14th Street called Square One. Square One has a unique look and feel with tall ceilings, a long bar, comfortable couch and bar seating inside and cute small tables outside - the fokal point is a big screen right above the bar flanked by curtains playing old black and white movies. The extensive cocktail menu is displayed on a big chalk board beneath the screen. You will notice that all of the cocktails are inspired by no other than James Bond - perfect if you are looking for something different. Square One also offers different specials every night of the week and one of my favorite touches is the chalkboard that is displayed outside the doors with the day's special and some funny quote, that will capture your attention. Square One does not just offer fabulous cocktails, they also have a good selection of craft beer, wine and also some good food options, the menu includes flatbread pizzas, sandwiches, cheese plates and fine meats. The staff is very cool too and will be happy to help you with recommendations on the menu. Definitely a great place for happy hour, night out with friends or a late night drink / snack. For more information, visit their website: http://www.squareonechicago.com.

I had friends in town and wanted to show them all the great food Chicago has to offer and so friday night's dinner was at Macello located on 1235 West Lake in the West Loop. We were a group of 7 and had reservations for 9pm. The first thing you recognize when you walk in the door is the delicious smell of italian cuisine and your eyes meet an artistically decorated restaurant with vibrant colors. The restaurant offers a very comfortable atmosphere and is great for groups. We were greeted at the door and seated promptly right next to one of their 2 wood-burning ovens, so I got to watch how the pizzas were prepared. A small appetizer plate with grilled zucchini, roasted tomato, olives and bread was sent from the kitchen to welcome us - a very nice touch. Our waiter took the time to explain the specials of the night and also suggested wine. We went with a bottle of Pinot Noir - fantastic! The menu offers many great choices and is like a mini trip to Italy. You can be sure to find authentic italian cuisine at Macello. The restaurant owner was present that night and made sure that the service and food was at its best all night long. For our appetizers we ordered prosciutto with tomato mozzarella and some fresh calamari. For my main course I decided to go with the salmon special over shrimp risotto paired with fresh grilled asparagus. I was extremely happy with my choice - the food was simply amazing and the wine complimented it well. After dinner we all were served a complimentary lemoncello to round up a truly wonderful evening with great friends. I need to come back to Macello again to try their thin crust pizza, it looked delicious - and pretty much everything else on their menu :-). I highly recommend Macello to anyone who wants to treat themselves to some good food in a welcoming atmosphere! Mehr Infos gibt's hier: http://www.macellochicago.com This time I have to thank Groupon for pointing me to Lutz Café and Pastry shop - a German inspired Café located on 2458 West Montrose in Lincoln Square. Lutz is a Chicago tradition and has been serving customers since 1948 - with a wide range of sweet treats such as cakes, cookies, chocolates and coffee satisfaction is guaranteed. When I stepped into Lutz Café I was reminded of a Café in my hometown Reutlingen in Germany and felt instantly comfortable. The left side of the Café is taken up by the long coffee bar displaying the cakes and cookies. The Café opens up in the back to the right with a couple of tables and a set of comfortable arm chairs. I ordered a strawberry mousse cake with coffee - delicious. The coffee came in a little can - same as you get in some older Cafes in Germany - with a side of fresh whipped cream. It was the perfect Saturday afternoon snack! The staff was very friendly and checked on me several time and even brought a complimentary pistachio cookie sample, that was so good, that I ended up ordering a couple to go before I left. Lutz Café also offers a cute little garden in the back with plenty of beautiful flowers- unfortunately it was not open yet, but I peeked out and definitely want to come back for it soon - and as Lutz Café offers free WIFI and is a BYOB place I can see myself writing out there in the sun. Lutz Cafe is also the right address to order cakes for special occasions such as weddings and birthday parties.
Mehr Informationen gibts hier: http://www.chicago-bakery.com/ I love bakeries / coffee shops, so I was happy to find another cute little place called La Boulangerie located on 915 West Belmont right next to the red line stop. As the name already indicates this is a French inspired bakery and café. It is small and colorful and just puts a smile on your face when you step in. Their signature items are definitely the baguettes - several different kinds are offered. These delicious baguettes are also used to craft some of the sandwiches listed on the menu - perfect for a snack or quick lunch. The menu is written on the big chalk board behind the counter and the various dishes offered are showcased in their display, so you can get an idea - of course all of your items will be prepared freshly. La Boulangerie also offers a variety of sweet treats such as little carrot cakes, lemon cakes and creamy desserts. I had a cup of coffee with a hazelnut cream treat - it was phenomenal! La Boulangerie offers some seating space with a couple of small tables that seat 2 people and one bigger table that will seat up to 6, but it is on the small side, which I find intriguing. The guy served us was really friendly and helpful. All in all a nice little place to get a snack or pick up a fresh baguette for your home.
La Boulangerie ist auf Facebook zu finden: http://www.facebook.com/pages/La-Boulangerie-Bakery-and-Caf%C3%A9/250542121715336 Since a couple of my friends have now moved to the South Loop in Chicago, we decided to have brunch in the area and found Little Branch Café on 1251 South Prairie Avenue. Don't be confused when approaching the café, it is located on the first floor of an apartment building and cannot be seen easily from the main street. Little branch café has been a neighborhood favorite since 2007! As soon as I stepped in, I liked the place - it's unique, casual and a little artsy. I love the interior, they have tree trunks for bars stools, how cool is that?! The menu offers a great selection of brunch & lunch favorites, dinner entrees and of course coffee and sweet treats! Brunch is served from 8am to 3pm every day. You have to order your food right when you get in and then you will receive an order number to take to your table, the food will be brought to you as soon as it is ready. It is first come first serve, as they do not take any reservations. We went there on a Sunday and only had to wait a couple of minutes. I had a big cup of coffee (brand: local metropolis) and a freshly prepared prosciutto tomato mozzarella Panini - it was very good! I also liked that they offer free cucumber water, it is one of my favorite things! The staff was friendly and I felt very welcome and comfortable. Little Branch Café is a great place to eat and hang out with friends! I can highly recommend it and I will be back to try one of their entrees and some sweet treats!
Man kann an jedem freien Tisch Platz nehmen, Little Branch Café akzeptiert keine Reservierungen. Little Branch Café bietet auch "Gurkenwasser" umsonst an, was ich sehr gerne mag! Last weekend a friend of mine took me to Mariano's fresh market located on 333 East Benton Pl in Chicago. I have heard about it before and was curious and now that I have visited Mariano's I would like to nick name it "the grocery store with a twist". Why? Because Mariano's does not just offer a wide variety of great groceries including freshly baked breads, fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and drinks. You can also eat at Mariano's - you can either choose to create your own salad from the fresh salad bar, pick your favorites from the hot bar and pay by weight (e.g. chicken, blackened tuna, rice, shrimp, vegetables etc.), have a personalized pizza made or get one by the slice, create your own sandwich or pick fresh oysters! But my favorite offer was that I could pick the meat - in my case a Mediterranean turkey burger - from the meat section, then pick my own bread and have it freshly grilled while I shopped for a couple of items! It does not get fresher than this! This is the perfect offer if you work in this area and need a spot for lunch - the variety is endless! Once my burger was ready, me and my friends enjoyed our food in the café area, which is also part of Mariano's and consists of tables and chairs as well as fresh water, condiments and utensils. After we finished eating, we went to get some gelato and coffee from Vero - conveniently located on the first floor! There is also another seating area to enjoy your dessert! It was wonderful! I will definitely come back on my next day off and browse through Mariano's again. I will say this though, you should have time when you go there, it can get quite overwhelming because there are just so many choices! :-) Another plus for all of you that are driving, Mariano's features a parking garage and offers 2 hour free parking for customers. For more information, visit their website at http://www.marianos.com/default.aspx Letztes Wochenende schlug eine meiner Freundinnen vor Mariano's fresh market auf 333 East Benton Pl in Chicago zum Mittagessen auszuprobieren.
